In Britain there are scholars in this field at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Nottingham, Birmingham, Cambridge. If you are a bit more broad you can include Oxford and London. Some of these schools have scholars dedicated to the field; others also have dedicated study centres.

In Europe there is, most notably, Leiden.

But perhaps I would be more helpful (if you want) if I knew the exact nature of what you're hoping to study. I would be interested anyway, so let me know. Perhaps I can even pass along a few names ....

How does one get into a British doctoral program? Make connections early on with potential advisors and be sure to write something substantial as a part of your m.a. work. Many of these programs want to know that you already have research and writing skill and the "pre-approval" of a potential advisor can go a long ways with admission committees.

great post.

in any case, in light of the Gospel, we shouldn't be surprised at any measure of bigotry, latent or explicit. it is there in all of us.

I agree the problem is often with the one praying rather than the prayer itself. But sometimes I think we just do things without even realizing what's going on. So, for me it is usually a matter of being genuine (and I believe it is possible to be that even when one is doing something simply because 'it's always been done that way'). When people make their public prayers a show, when they use them to showcase their knowledge, or when they spend more time making assertions than conversing with God, then I get annoyed (e.g., "God you said in ___ that ___ and what that means is ___. Amen"). So, if you're genuinely thankful for a meal and want to genuinely be thankful in prayer, by all means .... But if you're not, then maybe you should spend some time considering that first. That all seems rather underdeveloped and reactionary ... hmm.

Clearly there is a sense in which prayer is conversing with God and I do that. But I think there are lessons to be learned from devotional prayers like the Jesus Prayer or even praying a rosary. Those prayers themselves are full of truths through which God can speak to us and they constitute words which we do well to tell God. But there is something to becoming meditatively "lost" in them too.
